I think there's a problem with the question to be debated. To me, it's not *whether* society recognizes "gender identity", but what it *means* to recognize it. I'm writing from the US, where I suspect most average people really don't care who wears what clothing, or what adults do to their own bodies. However, the issue becomes more contested when we get into single-sex spaces and activities. Whether we care that Lia Thomas acts and dresses like a woman is an entirely different question from if Thomas gets to compete against women in athletics, and we shouldn't confuse the two. It is possible for one to say "yes" to the first question and "no" to the second, but this debate leaves out that entirely reasonable position.
